Food and Drink
Peka
Peka is a traditional and popular dish which takes a few hours to cook, but not long to prepare. Meat, such as veal or lamb, is baked alongside vegetables, potatoes, oil and spices under a bell-shaped lid. This lid is covered with hot ashes, and then slow cooked – creating a deliciously succulent one-pot meal.
Zagorski štrukli
Considered the national dish of Croatia, Zagorski štrukli can be made savoury or sweet, boiled or baked – it varies. Featuring on Croatia's cultural heritage list, the simple recipe takes dough and various types of filling and, when put together, creates a tasty treat.
Croatian Octopus Salad
The Croatian octopus salad is a fresh and delicious recipe, elevating a usually simple dish. This meal or side takes waxy potatoes, Spanish onion, garlic, as well as oils, parsley and seasoning, and adds them to tenderly cooked octopus.
Black Risotto
Crni rižot, or black risotto, is a special Croatian recipe, using squid ink to create the dark colour and unique flavour. This seafood dish, using either squid or cuttlefish, is very unique, and served in every seafood restaurant across the country!

Dubrovnik Highlights
Old City Walls
A stroll around Dubrovnik’s Old City Walls is a must! Originally constructed in the 10th century, the walls were reinforced in the 13th and 14th centuries, providing a solid defence against invaders. Offering spectacular views across both the city and ocean, these walls are amongst the finest in the world and a defining feature of Dubrovnik.
Stradun
Running through the centre of the Old Town, Stradun is undoubtedly one of Europe’s most beautiful thoroughfares. Featuring white limestone paving, the street is lined with delightful cafés, independent shops and Baroque homes, and many of the city’s monuments can be found here too.
Rector’s Palace
Designed by Onofrio de la Cava in the 15th century, Rector’s Palace boasts an outstanding mix of architectural styles and is now home to the city’s Cultural History Museum. Inside, visitors can view restored rooms, portraits, coats of arms and more.
Krk Island Highlights
Vrbnik
Built on top of a 50-metre-high cliff, Vrbnik is a labyrinth of winding alleys, historic houses and impressive monuments. The Old Town charms with its typical Mediterranean architecture, whilst the golden beaches are the perfect place to unwind.
Košljun
With its rich cultural heritage and breathtaking natural scenery, the island of Košljun is a true gem. A group of monks live on the island in the Franciscan monastery, part of which has been converted into a museum housing rare examples of Glagolitic manuscripts and a collection of folk costumes.
Pula Highlights
Roman Amphitheatre
Dominating the city centre, Pula’s Roman Amphitheatre is the sixth largest in the world. Built over the course of a century, the finishing touches were added in AD81 by Emperor Titus. With a near complete ring of walls, four towers, and a series of tunnels which were used by animals and gladiators, it is one of the city’s must-see sights.
Forum Square
The main square of both ancient and modern Pula, many of the city’s historical and cultural monuments can be found here. Be sure to visit the Temple of Augustus – a well-preserved temple boasting a richly decorated frieze and small archaeological display.
The Arch of the Sergii
Erected to honour the high-ranking Sergii family’s participation in the Battle of Actium, the Arch of the Sergii is the main gateway into Pula’s historical centre. Featuring two Corinthian columns, friezes depicting cupids and garlands, and a relief of a horse-drawn battle chariot, it is an architectural gem.

Rovinj Highlights
Old Town
With its colourful façades, quaint cobblestone streets, and charming architecture such as small shrines and picturesque arches, Rovinj’s Old Town is a delight to explore. Lined with independent shops, cafés and gelaterias, there’s plenty to keep you busy, and glimpses of the ocean between buildings never get old.
Balbi’s Arch
Dating back to the late 17th century, Balbi’s Arch stands at the entrance to the Old Town and is instantly recognisable by the Lion of Saint Mark – the symbol of the Venetian Republic. There are also two stone heads on either side of the arch, representing a Turk and a Venetian.
Church of St. Euphemia
With its commanding hilltop position, the Church of St. Euphemia is the symbol of Rovinj. There is an ancient Roman sarcophagus behind the right-hand altar, which is believed to contain the body of Saint Euphemia, and other notable paintings and sculptures inside.
