This morning, we head to the quaint market town of Bakewell, set in the Peak District and known for its Bakewell pudding. Here, you can take a leisurely stroll along the banks of the river Wye, or wander the lovely streets in and around the town, home to some charming shops and tearooms.
We continue to Chatsworth House for an afternoon visit. Home to the Dukes of Devonshire for many generations, the land was purchased by Elizabeth and William Cavendish in 1549 for £600. This was the Home of Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury, better known as Bess of Hardwick. During her lifetime, she married 4 times and rose to a position of great power and wealth. In 1547 she married William Cavendish, Treasurer of the King’s Chamber. They had eight children and made Chatsworth their home. A later marriage to George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury in 1567, saw Bess become Countess of Shrewsbury. Over the following generations, the house was transformed into what we see today.
On arrival, enjoy time to explore this stunning house and gardens, along with its well-stocked gift shop and café. We return to our hotel for dinner this evening.
We travel to Derby station by coach, where we board the White Rose steam journey to York or Scarborough. Relax in your tourist class seat and decide where would like to spend your afternoon. Arriving into York first, you can choose to disembark and explore this cathedral city with its ancient walls, wonderful streets, and rich history. If you'd prefer, you can stay on board the train and journey to Scarborough instead. This delightful seaside town on the Yorkshire Coast offers golden sandy beaches and plenty of ice cream! Having the freedom to decide your destination on the day, makes this journey extra special, as even the weather may play a part in your final decision!
The train will leave Scarborough later this afternoon, collecting the passengers who chose to visit York along the way, before returning to Derby. Upon arrival at the station, the coach returns us back to the hotel for a late supper.
After a leisurely breakfast, you are free to check out of the hotel and make your own way home.
