We continue to our base in the Rhine Valley, stopping off in Cologne for some free time. With its 19th-century towers, Cologne's impressive Gothic cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Germany's most-visited attraction. Wander through the cobblestone streets of the Old Town and admire the medieval churches, or explore the post-modern quarter on the banks of the River Rhine.
We later reach Assmannshausen, our base for the next four nights.
After a morning at leisure, we make the short journey to Rüdesheim, a picturesque village perched on the river Rhine. Known for its vineyards and chocolate-box architecture, be sure to wander the Drosselgasse in the heart of the Old Town, which is home to many popular cafés and restaurants.
The Rhine Valley is famous for producing some wonderful wines. We travel on the Winzerexpress road train to the cellars of Adolf Störzel where there will be the chance to sample some of the local produce.
Enjoy a full day exploring some of the most famous destinations in the Rhine Valley. We visit Koblenz which is known for being the confluence of both the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, and boasts pretty squares, historic churches, and half-timbered buildings.
We will also visit Boppard with its quaint old towns and charming shops, and St. Goar which is renowned for the largest free-hanging cuckoo clock in the world.
Enjoy a free day today to explore more of the Rhine Valley at your leisure. Wander around our resort of Assmannshausen or utilise the river cruise boats to discover more pretty villages along the shore.
Alternatively, join our optional excursion to the Moselle Valley, enjoying a scenic drive to the town of Cochem, perched high in the vine-clad slops. The picture-postcard Old Town boasts beautiful architecture, and the town is overlooked by the fairy tale Reichsburg Castle.
