Today we begin our journey to follow in the footsteps of the Pendle Witches. Our expert historian, Simon Entwistle, joins us today to bring to life this haunting story.
Our first stop is the Pendle Heritage Centre which has an exhibition telling the story of the Pendle Witches and sets the scene for our day. We then journey to the infamous haunted Pendle Hill. believed to be where the witches met.
Our next stop is Clitheroe which is one of the Ribble Valley's bustling market towns. It is also believed that the accused witches were held in the dungeons of Clitheroe Castle for one night, on their way to Lancaster Castle. We stop here for lunch. There are plenty of tea rooms and restaurants serving local produce for you to enjoy.
This afternoon, we journey further into the picturesque Ribble Valley. We make our way past the fabulous 1539 Stonyhurst college and then drive on to land owned by King Charles as we make our way through stunning countryside. We have an afternoon break at the award-winning village of Chipping which is said to be over 1000 years old and make sure you visit the famous farm shop or pop for a drink in The Sun Inn which is said to be one of the most haunted pubs in Lancashire.
We then return back to the hotel to relax and enjoy dinner this evening.
This morning, we depart after breakfast, head to Lancaster, and enjoy an included entrance to Lancaster Castle. The castle has stood for around 1,000 years and has witnessed scenes of significant historical, cultural and political importance throughout the centuries. It was also the place the Pendle Witches were incarcerated before their trial in 1612. 10 were found guilty of witchcraft, sentenced to death and hanged on the moor above the town.
Once our journey to follow the Pendle Witches is complete, we make our way home full of haunting stories.
