Today, we enjoy a visit to the heart of Northumberland coast, Bamburgh. The town's greatest building is its imposing castle, which has stood guard over the Northumberland coastline for 1,400 years. There will be free time to explore Bamburgh before we head to Seahouses.
From here, we meet our skipper for a fantastic cruise to the Farne Islands. Your onboard guide will highlight the various wildlife, such as varieties of nesting seabirds including puffins, terns and kittiwakes. There are around 3,000 grey seals amongst the Farne Islands, often seen basking on the rocks – keep an eye out! With spectacular views of the Northumberland coastline, this is sure to be a cruise to remember!
After breakfast, we visit the imposing Alnwick Castle. Located in the heart of Northumberland, this castle is one of the most iconic historic sites in the country and is often used as a set location for films and TV shows such as Robin Hood, Transformers, Harry Potter and Downton Abbey. The castle has been home to the Percy family for over 700 years, and with over 900 years of history to uncover, a fascinating experience is guaranteed.
We will also have free time to explore Alnwick. This medieval town still retains its charm, and a visit to the atmospheric market square is a must. Browse the local shops, watch the world go by from one of the delightful cafés, or pick something up from one of the second-hand book stores.
We return to the hotel early afternoon and relax before dinner.
Today we follow in the footsteps of the Romans and the route of Hadrian’s Wall, calling at the ancient market town of Hexham and visiting Chesters Roman Fort. Here, we learn more about what life was like on one of the Roman Empire’s most northern outposts and the most complete Roman cavalry fort in Britain.
After breakfast, we journey home.
You will stay for four nights at 4-star Slaley Hall Hotel near Hexham.
