Today we journey inland and uphill from the Costa Blanca, Here, the Baetic Mountains, which cross the southeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula, break before they come to the sea of Alicante. Guadalest has many museums, restaurants and shops. At the top, the ruins of the castle and the church's belfry are perched spectacularly on the edge of the mountain offering wonderful views.
Today's optional excursion visits the port city of Cartagena, in the Mediterranean's Costa Cálida, which has been prized since Carthaginian times. Thanks to its strategic position on the Murcia coast, it has been inhabited by several cultures which have all left their mark on its artistic heritage. The number one reason for visiting Cartagena is to visit the Old Town. It's a captivating UNESCO World Heritage Site that draws in thousands of visitors a year. Built in the 16th century, the Walled City is surrounded by a vast stone wall, built to protect it from attack during the colonial era.
