Today's optional excursion visits the port city of Cartagena, in the Mediterranean's Costa Cálida, which has been prized since Carthaginian times. Thanks to its strategic position on the Murcia coast, it has been inhabited by several cultures which have all left their mark on its artistic heritage. The number one reason for visiting Cartagena is to visit the Old Town. It's a captivating UNESCO World Heritage Site that draws in thousands of visitors a year. Built in the 16th century, the Walled City is surrounded by a vast stone wall: fortifications to protect it from attack during the colonial era.
